What is sideloading?

Sideloading is the act of installing apps outside of the App Store. The App Store is restricted to many apps, and require Apple's Approval to publish apps.

Apps come in a .ipa file extension. A .ipa is a packaged application created for iOS. You can imagine it as a .exe file, or a .apk, or a .app, except its for iOS.

Is sideloading dangerous?

Sideloading itself isn’t necessarily dangerous as no viruses have been seen “in the wild”. However, spyware frameworks have been exploited previously, such as Pegasus or SeaShell. As long as you’re careful with what you install, there's almost no risk. Plus, both of these exploitation frameworks are only on versions 16 & 17.0 and below.

Is sideloading illegal?

It depends on what you sideload. Pirated or modified apps (e.g. infinite currency) are illegal. While arrests are rare, mass distribution of pirated content can lead to legal consequences.
